Weddings, Eid, Diwali, a sister’s engagement, or just a family member in Dubai who misses proper Indian clothes. Whatever the reason, sending sarees, salwar suits, lehengas and kurtas to the Gulf is one of the most common parcels we handle from Delhi. Sending sarees, suits and Indian clothing from Delhi to the Gulf? Know courier charges, customs duty, VAT and packing tips for UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The good news is that it’s quick and fairly affordable. The tricky part is knowing what it will cost, what happens at customs, and how to pack delicate embroidered pieces so they arrive looking the way they left. This guide covers all of it for the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
How much does it cost to courier clothes from Delhi to the Gulf?
Courier charges depend on chargeable weight (the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight), the destination, and the service speed. Heavy bridal pieces and bulky boxes cost more than light cotton kurtas.
For bulk shipments of 30 kg and above, Shipex World’s starting rate for Dubai (UAE) is around ₹189 per kg. That means a 30 kg parcel starts from roughly ₹5,670 before fuel surcharge and other applicable charges. For smaller parcels, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the rate depends on weight and postcode, so a quote is the most accurate way to know.
A few things that move the price:
- Weight and box size. Courier uses volumetric weight = length x width x height (cm) divided by 5000. A big, fluffy box of lehengas can cost more than its weight suggests.
- Express or economy. Express through DHL, FedEx, Aramex or UPS is faster. Economy is cheaper but slower.
- Remote or restricted areas. Deliveries outside main city zones may attract extra charges.
- Fuel surcharge and handling. Always ask for the all-in figure.
Approximate weight of Indian clothing
This helps you estimate your parcel before you call. These are rough figures and vary by fabric and work:
| Item | Approximate weight |
|---|---|
| Cotton kurta | 0.3 to 0.5 kg |
| Salwar suit (3 pieces, light fabric) | 0.6 to 1 kg |
| Saree (silk or cotton) | 0.5 to 0.9 kg |
| Heavily embroidered saree | 1 to 1.5 kg |
| Lehenga (festive or bridal) | 2 to 5 kg |
| Sherwani | 1.5 to 3 kg |
If you’re sending several items, pack them together in one box. One 10 kg parcel is cheaper than three separate 3 kg parcels.
Customs duty and VAT on clothes: UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia
This is the part that surprises people most, so here is how each country works. Rules change, so confirm the latest with your courier before you ship.
UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah)
- Customs duty is generally 5 percent of the goods value, and 5 percent VAT applies on imports.
- Courier imports with a declared value below AED 1,000 are duty free according to Aramex’s published guidance. Some sources quote lower thresholds, so ask your carrier which applies to your parcel. aramex
- Under the India-UAE CEPA, many Indian-origin textiles can enter at 0 percent duty if the origin rules are met and you provide valid origin papers.
Bahrain
- Bahrain updated its rules in May 2026. Personal shipments and postal parcels valued at BD100 or more will be subject to customs duties, in addition to 10 per cent value-added tax. gdnonline
- Duty is generally 5 percent for most clothing under the GCC common tariff, with 10 percent VAT calculated on top.
- Splitting one order into smaller parcels to stay under the limit can create enforcement problems, so declare honestly.
Saudi Arabia
- Personal courier shipments below 1,000 SAR generally attract no customs duty, but VAT of 15 percent still applies. goat
- Above that value, duty applies. For clothing it typically falls in the 5 to 15 percent range depending on classification.
- Since 1 January 2026, deliveries inside Saudi Arabia need a valid National Address, so ask your receiver for their short address before booking.
| Country | Duty-free value (courier, personal) | VAT | Typical duty on clothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | Below about AED 1,000 (confirm with carrier) | 5% | 5%, or 0% with CEPA origin proof |
| Bahrain | Below BHD 100 | 10% | 5% |
| Saudi Arabia | Below SAR 1,000 | 15% | About 5% to 15% |
Who pays? Usually the receiver pays any duty and VAT on delivery. If you want to avoid that, ask for a DDP (delivered duty paid) booking, where the sender pays everything upfront.
Documents you need
- A clear invoice listing each item, quantity and value
- Sender’s ID and address proof (KYC)
- Receiver’s full name, address, phone number and, for Saudi Arabia, the National Address
- Receiver’s ID number, if the destination customs asks for it
- Certificate of origin or origin declaration, if you want to claim the UAE CEPA zero duty on commercial shipments
Avoid vague descriptions like “clothes”. Write “3 silk sarees, 2 cotton salwar suits (used, personal)” with realistic values. Under-declaring invites delays, penalties or seizure.
What you should not send
- Counterfeit or fake branded clothing
- Items with offensive prints, slogans or imagery that may clash with local norms, especially for Saudi Arabia
- Perfume, liquids, powders or batteries tucked inside the box
- Cash, gold or valuable jewellery in a clothes parcel
- Items made with restricted animal materials, which may need permits
When in doubt, ask before you pack.
How to pack sarees, suits and lehengas
- Check the fabric is clean and fully dry. Damp clothes can develop a musty smell on the way.
- Wrap silk and embroidered pieces in muslin or tissue. This protects zari and sequins from snagging.
- Fold sarees in their original fold lines. Place heavy borders inward.
- Use a plastic bag inside the box. Seal it well to guard against moisture.
- Keep heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Use a new, double-walled corrugated box, and fill empty gaps with paper or soft clothing.
- Seal all seams with strong tape, and stick the address label on top.
- Put a copy of the receiver’s address inside the box.
For bridal lehengas and sherwanis, consider a firm box with extra padding around embellished areas, and avoid vacuum bags that can crush delicate work.
How long does delivery take?
Typical express delivery from Delhi is around 2 to 4 working days to the UAE and 3 to 6 working days to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, subject to customs clearance and local conditions. Economy services take longer. Peak seasons like Diwali, Eid and wedding months can add delays, so book at least a week before you need it.
